Low Order Visibility for Flexible PCB

Reading time ( words)

Taiwan's flexible PCB makers are reporting low order visibility in the wake of the US ban on Huawei, whose impact is rippling across the smartphone market, with Apple probably also taking a hit, according to Digitimes.

Flexible PCB firms Zhen Ding Technology and Flexium Interconnect, in particular—both of which are reportedly among the flexible PCB suppliers of Apple—are seeing low order visibility. The memory sector is also being hit by low demand partly resulting from the ban, sending suppliers bracing for a weak third quarter.

But there is still some good news coming out from the PCB supply chain, as makers still expect robust demand from the networking device segment in the second half of the year.

The Order of the PCB Dinosaurs (originally called the PWB Dinosaurs—the sign of a true dino) was born because of a comment almost 20 years ago by my good friend Bernie Kessler. Back in the day, when suppliers like us became IPC members, we could only be associate members; unlike fabricators, we could not serve on the board and we could not lead key committees.

All About Flex: Specifying a Flexible Circuit

IPC has created a specification document, IPC 6013, which is referenced for many flex circuit applications. This commercial document, in combination with the CAD data and print, is used as the product specification. Most flexible circuitry fabricators’ internal quality standards are based on IPC 6013.
