North American PCB orders outpacing electronic equipment orders (Walt Custer)

North American PCB orders outpacing electronic equipment orders North American rigid PCB orders were up 32% on a dollar basis (August 2000 vs. August 1999), according to the IPC statistical survey.
The chart below shows the growth of electronic equipment vs PCB orders. With PCB orders growing at +30% on a 3-month average (3/12) basis, they continue to exceed electronic equipment, suggesting a modest downward "growth correction" in the coming months. As we move into the traditionally strong fall season, however, the PCB outlook remains bright.
The August Electronic Durable goods data recently released by the Department of Commerce portends a modest uptick (August 2000 vs. August 1999) in electronic equipment orders but a slowing on a 3/12 basis, suggesting that the PCB vs. electronic equipment order gap will remain significant.
