Integrating product technologies sets Parlex apart from the rest

Integrating product technologies sets Parlex apart from the rest Eric Zanin of Parlex Corp. talks to PCB007
Parlex Corp., a leading provider of flexible interconnect solutions, announced the election of Eric Zanin to Corporate Vice President, Marketing and Sales, at the end of August. In the position he's held for approximately two months, Zanin is responsible for the global oversight of the corporation's sales and marketing. He continues as a member of the corporation's strategic planning team.
Zanin's most recent position was Director of Business Development, in which he was responsible for strategic marketing and new business ventures, including Parlex's recent acquisitions of Poly-Flex Circuits, Inc. and Dynaflex, Inc. Zanin joined Parlex in 1994 and has held numerous positions within the corporation, including National Sales Manager and Production Control Manager for Flexible Circuits Products.
Zanin spoke with PCB007 about corporate goals for Parlex the coming years:
PCB007: What are your top goals for Parlex for the next one to five years?
Zanin: From a sales perspective, we want to continue pushing development of our target markets-telecommunications, automotive, RFID, appliances. We want to continue to grow sales at our seven manufacturing facilities and keep pushing that double-digit growth.
From a macro level, we want to continue to invest a lot of our income in R&D and capital equipment. Where we have the opportunity, we want to drive our proprietary technology into new products.
PCB007: You are responsible for the corporation's order generation objectives. What are those objectives?
Zanin: We have some pretty clear internal goals. We want to continue what we're doing: we've expanded into China and Mexico; we've bought factories in the U.K. and Rhode Island; we're refacilitating our prototype shop in California. Our challenge will be to get that all going over the next couple of years.
PCB007: Are there any major changes ahead in Parlex's marketing strategies?
Zanin: I think one thing that we continue to do is integrate each of the product technologies together-I think this sets us apart from our peers. We have a total array of flex interconnect products, and what we enjoy doing with our customer base is working with them on the products they need.
Maybe it sets up the technology curve and a higher price, but we enjoy combining two technology families-say, taking a laminated cable and screening on silver to make it almost a circuit board, or producing a single-sided circuit board and putting all the technology on the other side. Our applications engineering group is able to dig into each facility and find the technological fit. Our approach is, don't try to sell into the customer your technology: fit your technology into their need.
PCB007: Any other thoughts?
Zanin: I think we're doing the right things at Parlex. When I came to the company six years ago, we had two factories. We're up to seven now, and we've planned for additional expansion throughout the globe. I love my job: this is a great industry.
