PCBs will correct downward in first four months of 2001, says Custer (Jan '01)

PCBs will correct downward in first four months of 2001, says Custer The industry probably will see a noticeable downward correction in the first third of 2001 for PCBs, according to analyst Walt Custer. Once excess inventories of personal computers are cleared, and double- and over-orders are flushed throughout the supply chain, Custer says growth should resume.
Lower interest rates will take 12-18 months to affect demand, but they will instill optimism in the short term. Their first positive effect will be in the consumer/automotive sectors.
The attached chart shows the 3/12 rate of change of rigid PCBs vs. total electronic equipment. PCBs and equipment are now in balance, but PCB order growth will probably overcorrect and drop below equipment for a time. Because the imbalance was not nearly as great as in 1995, the downward correction will be shorter and not nearly as severe as in 1996.
