Top 16 U.S. PCB Companies: 1995 & 2003 (updated)

Top 16 U.S. Printed Circuit Board Companies Global Sales, Retrospective 1995 And 2003, $m “Before and After the Storm” by
In early December 2003, PCB007 posted rankings for Japanese PCB makers. Thirty companies in the Japanese list were ranked from 1995 through 2002. Each was the same Japanese company from beginning to end; growth or decline was organic, with almost no acquisitions/divestitures. What a contrast with the U.S. industry!
You can't say that the Sanmina of 2003 even resembles the Sanmina of 1995; likewise for most of the others in our 2003 ranking. So I thought I'd take the Japanese ranking as a cue, comparing 1995 and 2003 as if all the U.S. company acquisitions were moved back to their 1995 sales and added, to provide an "as if" figure. That way, we can measure the real impact of this turbulent period, putting together the 1995 "beginning" and the 2003 "end."

The 1995 Teradyne figure includes 1995 Herco; the 1995 Viasystems figure includes 1995 ISL and 1995 Mommers. We had all those old records in Fabfile.
* 1995 sales figures are equivalent to company sales in 1995 plus all acquisitions in 1995-2003, using 1995 sales for each, whether or not subsequently closed or divested. Our purpose is to measure the global impact of this tumultuous period on U.S companies' global printed circuit board sales--comparing levels before the frenzy began with those after the precipitate wind-down.
It all sets the stage for a new phase of more sober growth--more like the Japanese model.
